O papa Leão XIV foi internado na manhã desta terça-feira (13) no hospital Gemelli, em Roma, na Itália, para passar por uma cirurgia de retirada de um nódulo no pulmão. O procedimento foi recomendado após médicos identificarem a lesão durante exames recentes.
O pontífice, de 71 anos, anunciou o diagnóstico no domingo (11), durante uma oração na Praça de São Pedro, no Vaticano. Segundo ele, o nódulo foi detectado em estágio inicial e está bem localizado. A natureza da lesão, no entanto, não foi divulgada.
De acordo com o porta-voz do Vaticano, Matteo Bruni, a recuperação deverá levar cerca de uma semana. Por esse motivo, o papa cancelou os compromissos oficiais até o dia 20 de outubro. Durante a internação, ele deverá continuar trabalhando no hospital.
O cardeal Pietro Parolin afirmou nesta terça-feira que está preocupado com a cirurgia, mas disse que o pontífice está sereno. Segundo ele, a internação foi uma surpresa, já que não havia expectativa de um problema desse tipo.
Ainda não há confirmação sobre a manutenção da viagem do papa à América Latina, prevista para o início de novembro. O roteiro inclui visitas ao Peru, ao Uruguai e à Argentina, com duração de quase duas semanas.
